Heritage and Museums
Uncover the captivating history of the region, where a wealth of museums, charming homesteads, and exquisite heritage architecture await your exploration.
The region has been home to Aboriginal people for at least 21,000 years and has a rich and significant Indigenous heritage. Fast forward to 1818, explorers Hume and Meehan ventured across the land that would later become Goulburn. On 14 March 1863, 45 years later, Goulburn was declared Australia’s first inland city by royal letters patent, issued by Queen Victoria.
Goulburn flourished on the grounds of a prosperous wool industry, laying the foundation for robust agricultural roots. The city’s ascent continued with the cathedrals, a fleeting yet impactful gold rush, and the evolution of a rail system, all contributing to Goulburn’s remarkable growth. Today, the majestic historic buildings and residences that grace the cityscape bear testimony to Goulburn’s opulent past, showcasing its affluence during the vibrant 19th century.
